Graduation ceremony – Komunità Santa Marija
Thursday, August 13, 2009
11 young persons have graduated from Sedqa’s drug residential rehabilitation programme during the Agency’s annual graduation ceremony held last weekend. The theme of this year’s graduation event at Komunità Santa Marija was “Il-Komunità tifthilna Bibien Godda” (The therapeutic community opens new doors for us).
During her address to those present, Ms. Sina Bugeja, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation for Social Welfare Services, emphasized the need that we keep on looking for ways how to change ourselves in a positive way. Ms. Bugeja said that this does not only apply to the new graduates or the current residents at Komunità Santa Marija, but to everybody.
This event was very well attended by residents, their relatives and Sedqa staff. It started with the celebration of Holy Mass, following which the new graduates were given certificates by Ms. Bugeja.
The highlight of the evening was the traditional letting off of white doves by the new graduates, signifying their newfound freedom now that they have become drug-free.
Komunità Santa Marija is Sedqa’s residential rehabilitation community for persons with drug dependence problems. The programme lasts about seventeen months and is divided into three categories: Merhba (the orientation phase of the programme), Formazzjoni (which is the heart of the programme) and Sfida (re-entry back into society). Currently there are a total of 37 residents.
