Embark for Life – better integration for young people in society
Tuesday, December 15, 2009

The Foundation for Social Welfare Services today launched the project Embark for Life (E4L – ESF 3.61). This project is co-financed by the European Union, European Social Fund and is being coordinated by Agenzija Appogg and Agenzija Sedqa within the same Foundation, in collaboration with the Employment and Training Corporation and the Housing Authority.

Ms. Sina Bugeja, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation for Social Welfare Services stated that youths pass through important phases in their life, where the persons take several important decisions that will affect them throughout life. By means of this project, 140 young people who are currently passing through difficult times shall also have the opportunity to integrate themselves better in society through better employability prospects and adequate accommodation. Ms. Bugeja also thanked the Employment and Training Corporation and the Housing Authority for their ongoing support to this project.

Mr. Francis Borg, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Social Policy, emphasised on the importance of supporting young people who are at risk of social exclusion. Mr. Borg said that the Embark 4 Life Project will not only provide support to young people but will also serve to promote a more inclusive society; a society that looks in a more positive way at these young people.

The aim of the E4L project is to provide support to young people, aged between 16 and 24 years, who need assistance to integrate themselves better within the workforce and society. Young people who already benefit from the specialised services of Agenzija Appogg and Agenzija Sedqa will also have the chance of benefiting from this project.

Through E4L, young people will be benefiting from a number of individual sessions with a Professional Youth Support Worker. They will be assisted to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and outline areas where they need to work on in order to improve their employability prospects. Young people will also have a chance to benefit from vocational training. With the help of the Employment and Training Corporation, they will be supported to identify suitable employment opportunities. On the other hand, the Housing Authority will intervene and assist in cases where these young people require adequate accommodation. So far, 86 young people have already submitted their interest to benefit from the E4L project and initial meetings with these candidates already took place.

Agenzija Appogg and Agenzija Sedqa already offer specialised services for young people. The Adolescent Outreach Service offered by Agenzija Appogg, offers support to those adolescents, between the age of 13 and 18 years, who have emotional and behavioural problems. This service aims to promote the physical, emotional, social and spiritual well being of these adolescents, through individualized support, involving their parents/carers, as much as possible, in this process. The Teen Support Services, offered by Agenzija Sedqa aim to identify young persons at high risk of misusing substances or who have already started experimenting with substances. This is done through individual sessions with the adolescents and their significant others as well as through the Booster programme, which is offered in secondary schools.
