BABES This is part of the T.F.A.L primary prevention programme. It targets Year 3 children (7/8 years) and is comprised of six one-hour classroom sessions, with approximately 20 children in each class. sedqa-trained facilitators deliver the programme once weekly using visual aids such as puppets and flash cards to recount a succession of six stories. The Babes programme is a life skills based programme originally conceived in the United States and adapted for use in Malta. The purpose of BABES is to enable children to learn and practice living/loving skills and make positive early decisions about alcohol and other drugs.
The BABES Follow-up This programme is based on the same concept as the BABES. It is intended to compliment the BABES programme, to provide continuity and strengthen the skills that the children learn in year 3. The programme runs over three to four sessions each 60-90 minute. During the current scholastic year this programme is being reserved exclusively to Year 5 students in Government schools, and to a small sample of Church and Private Schools.
'Qed Nikber' The programme 'Qed Nikber' is a day seminar for children in Year 6. The students are offered learning activities which help them develop decision making skills, assertiveness and awareness about peer pressure. Interactive discussions, activities, story telling and role plays, help the children to identify what goes on around them and to choose what behaviour they want to copy in their life. Through the programme, the children are invited to take responsibility for the choice that they make in life and to being to take a closer look at consequences of such choices. The seminar is being delivered in the classrooms or as a day outing by the schools in their chosen premises.
'Nikber Ahjar' The 'Nikber Ahjar' programme is targeted to help children in residential homes to develop a resilient personality and replenish them with prevention techniques which will help them to face future challenges in their life related to addictions. The programme covers a multitude of topics in an interactive method where children are invited to explore their self-esteem, their ability to express feelings, assertiveness and problem solving skills. These sessions are delivered in small groups.
Drama Programme sedqa in collaboration with a group of volunteers, offers two short drama skits, followed by in-depth discussion about substance abuse. One of the dramas is targeted for parents and the other one is ideal for Year 6 students. The schools are encouraged to take both programmes so that both children and parents receive educational information about the topic contemporarily.
Talks Talks are delivered on request to parents and teachers in schools. These talks help parents and teachers understand which skills will help the child in prevention from substances abuse and future addictions.
'Skola Sajf' Every year, sedqa Agency, together with the Skola Sajf coordinators from the Education Division organizes a special three day programme for year 4, year 5 and year 6 children attending Skola Sajf. The programme is delivered by the BABES facilitators.
Special Schools This project aims at reaching out to children with disabilities. Our target audience is children with disabilities in government, private and church schools, and schools for children with disabilities, including Guardian Angel, Eden Foundation, Wardija School and San Miguel. Rather than expecting individuals to try to adapt to sedqa's T.F.A.L prevention programme, our aim is to recognize and respect individual differences by making our programmes more flexible for the target audience. This requires that our programmes be tailor-made to suit such differences.
